The young Hitler was a resentful, discontented child. Moody, lazy, of unstable temperament, he was deeply hostile towards his strict, authoritarian father and strongly attached to his indulgent, hard-working mother, whose death from cancer in December was a shattering blow to the adolescent Hitler. Hitler as a baby After spending four years in the Realschule in Linz, he left school at the age of sixteen with dreams of becoming a painter. In October , the provincial, middle-class boy left home for Vienna , where he was to remain until leading a bohemian, vagabond existence. Embittered at his rejection by the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, he was to spend “five years of misery and woe” in Vienna as he later recalled, adopting a view of life which changed very little in the ensuing years, shaped as it was by a pathological hatred of Jews and Marxists, liberalism and the cosmopolitan Habsburg monarchy. Existing from hand to mouth on occasional odd jobs and the hawking of sketches in low taverns, the young Hitler compensated for the frustrations of a lonely bachelor’s life in miserable male hostels by political harangues in cheap cafes to anyone who would listen and indulging in grandiose dreams of a Greater Germany. In Vienna he acquired his first education in politics by studying the demagogic techniques of the popular Christian-social Mayor, Karl Lueger, and picked up the stereotyped, obsessive anti-Semitism with its brutal, violent sexual connotations and concern with the “purity of blood” that remained with him to the end of his career. From crackpot racial theorists like the defrocked monk, Lanz von Liebenfels, and the Austrian Pan-German leader, Georg von Schoenerer, the young Hitler learned to discern in the “Eternal Jew” the symbol and cause of all chaos, corruption and destruction in culture, politics and the economy. The press, prostitution, syphilis, capitalism, Marxism, democracy and pacifism–all were so many means which “the Jew” exploited in his conspiracy to undermine the German nation and the purity of the creative Aryan race.

Posted on October 7, by librariantiff One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is work to promote reading for fun and helping students find books that they will enjoy. I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables.
It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own. I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes. For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them. With 30 seconds remaining, they make note of the title of the book and give it a ranking.
If at any time they find a book they want to check out, they can hold on to that book. All other books go back in the box, we rotate the boxes, and repeat this activity times. I always get great feedback from teachers and students with this activity…they love it! By the final round, about half of the students will typically have a book that they want to check out.

But the dimly lit conference room in the Shirlington Branch Library in Arlington County sounded more like a house party than a place for inside voices. On a recent September evening, men and women young and old exchanged phone numbers, e-mail addresses and book recommendations. On the third Sunday of every month, bookworms arrive in the hopes of meeting someone special through a common love of reading.
Courtney Conklin, 30, who teaches kindergarten in Woodbridge, was attending her first session last month and said she would definitely be back. Through Google, she discovered a library in Fargo, N. The concept is simple: Each person brings two or three books he or she is reading or already loves and uses them to spark conversation. The hope is that programs like this will remind young people what we can offer.
In the year since, groups have been as small as nine people and as large as 39, spanning their late 20s to early 60s. Fifty-two-year-old David Leitzia of Alexandria, an engineer, has been to three sessions. Many people leave having made good friends and return the next month to make more, she said. There have been groups of us who get together at the end and shut the library down.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian.
Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date. Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going.

Seventh grader Calli June is starting her tenth new school. Her mom picks up and moves every time she breaks up with a boyfriend, and Calli’s Tourette’s Syndrome really doesn’t help her make new friends at the new schools. Above all, Calli is tired of moving, and she hopes this school will be her last. A quick, sweet read that absolutely accomplishes the author’s stated purpose of bringing awareness to Tourette’s Syndrome, which the author also experiences. Calli June is a sympathetic, real main character, and I found myself wanting to reach in and strangle her flighty mother.
Why some women just can’t seem to function without a man in their lives is just beyond me. Unfortunately, Calli June’s mother represents far too many mothers in our students’ lives, and I’m sure many readers will recognize themselves in Calli June. The book alternates between Calli June and her classmate and neighbor, a boy named Jinsong. Calli June’s chapters are told in free verse, which works brilliantly to spotlight her Tourette’s symptoms. Jinsong’s chapters are very short–no longer than two pages–and written in prose.
The short chapters make this a great choice for reluctant readers. They aren’t even chapters, really, just alternating viewpoints. Not one is longer than two pages.

Although with similarities with a different author there seemed an additional richness in this edition. The Mille Miglia and Tagia Florio are explained in the context of the contributions to the respective local economies and relative ease of road closure in sparsely populated regions.
